The University of Limerick (UL) is home to more than 2,400 paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and decorative objects on campus.

Open to the public and free of charge, the many collections and exhibitions are spread throughout the Campus with a high concentration of work in the Foundation Building, including the Watercolour Society of Ireland National Collection, the Kinney Mosaics, The National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland and contemporary exhibitions in the Bourn Vincent Gallery.  Plassey House is host to the Irish American Cultural Institute's O'Malley Collection of Irish Art, Oriental Art and Ceramic Collection along with the 18th and 19th century works from the Armitage Collection.   The mission of the University of Limerick’s Visual Arts body is to make accessible works of art for the benefit of a variety of audiences, in support of the educational and cultural goals of the University and for the benefit of the community at large.

The University of Limerick obtained Gallery Status from the Irish Revenue Commissioners in 31 January 2007.
