A QCA is a score that reflects your assessment results. ‘Q’ stands for Quality i.e.., how well you have done, ‘C’ stands for credits i.e., the credits attached to each module you take, and ‘A’ stands for average i.e., the score averages all modules you do in UL (University of Limerick).

Yes, at the end of 1st year your cumulative QCA must be at 2.0 or over to progress into 2nd year.  

There are two QCA figures on my transcript, what do both figures mean? 

The semester quality credit average (QCA) represents the average quality of student’s performance in all modules taken in one semester.  

The cumulative QCA represents the average quality of a student’s performance in all modules taken to date in a particular programme of study. This QCA score travels with you through each semester.  

Students who have not met minimum standards (i.e., a QCA of 2.00) will, on the recommendation of the relevant Examinations Board, be required to do one of the following: 

Take annual repeats (maximum of four modules excluding I grades). Annual repeats are capped  

Repeat a full semester or take modules on a link-in basis  

Repeat full year 

Have their enrollment terminated (THERE A LOTS OF OPTIONS BEFORE THIS POINT SO DON’T PANIC!) 

To progress to your next year of studies, your cumulative QCA must be above 2.0 after the summer repeat examinations window. So, if your QCA is below 2.0 but you have repeat exams to clear in August, it will be your QCA after those repeat results that is considered. 

The ‘Residual QCA’ is a score given on your transcript based on the prediction that you will score a C3 in each of your repeat exams. The residual QCA predicts you will get a C3 in the repeat exams of any F/N/NG or D1/D2 grades on your transcript. For example, if your residual QCA is 2.32 and you have 1F, 1D2 and 2 D1s, the 2.32 assumes you will repeat all 4 of these and achieve a C3.
