Internships & Trainee placements

The U.L. Eist Student Counselling and Wellbeing Service believes in supporting the development and training of professionals in psychology, counselling, and psychotherapy. Each academic year the service offers a limited number of unpaid trainee placements and internships. The number is dependent on the capacity of the service to provide such places during any given year.

Applications are accepted from the following:

  • Trainees who are currently completing either an undergraduate or post graduate training in counselling/psychotherapy that is accredited by/expected to be accredited by the IACP/IAHIP/ICP.
  • Graduates who have successfully completed an undergraduate or post graduate training in counselling/psychotherapy and whom are working towards accreditation with the IACP/IAHIP/ICP.
  • Counselling/Clinical/Educational Psychologists in professional training (PhD) recognised by the PSI.

When to apply:

The recruitment of trainees and interns commences each year in April. Please do not contact the service sooner than this. You will be asked to recontact us in April if you do this. Applications that do not meet the above criteria will not be considered. C.V.s received after the last day of April will not be considered.

How to apply:

Prospective applicants who meet the above criteria should forward their CV and cover email to counselling@ul.ie. Applications should not be forwarded to individual staff members due to the high volume received each year. Please confirm in your email that you have read and understand the points to note below.

Points to note:

  • Interviews are held in May/June with successful candidates commencing placement/internship hours in the next academic year i.e. August/September.
  • Placements last the full academic year rather than the number of hours you may have left to fulfill. You may continue into the summer months if needed.
  • Interns may be retained for a second academic year if suitable and if this is within the capacity of the service to provide.
  • In addition to your clinical hours, you will be expected to attend the weekly team meeting which is currently held at 9-10am on thursday mornings. This time is subject to change.
