The Science Learning Centre is part of the Centre for Transformative Learning at the University of Limerick. The Science Learning Centre provides support to UL students whose degree includes a science or engineering component. We also work with staff in science and engineering disciplines to develop transformative pedagogies for STEM disciplines in higher education.

PLEASE NOTE: WE HAVE MOVED OUR SERVICES ONLINE TO THE SCIENCE LEARNING CENTRE SULIS SITE. UL STUDENTS CAN ACCESS THIS AT:

FOR STUDENTS REPEATING MODULES IN SUMMER OF 2021 - IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM ACCESS OFFICE:

UL Repeat Fee Waiver:

  • Due to the impact of COVID on the financial status of students, the University of Limerick is offering a fee-waiver scheme for students in relation to the summer annual repeats fees (of 171 euro per module) for the academic year 2020/21. This once-off waiver applies to students who wish to avail of it for any annual repeats taking place during Summer 2021 only. Repeat fees will continue to apply for link-in, semester and repeat year for 2021/22 or subsequent years.
  • Students must indicate if they wish to avail of the waiver before 5pm on 27 August, 2021, through the relevant tab on the Student Administration Portal (www.si.ul.ie). After this date, the waiver scheme will be closed, and it will not be possible to avail of the scheme. If a student does not submit a response, this will indicate that a student does not wish to avail of the waiver scheme. Having responded, should your circumstances change, you may edit your response on the Student Administration Portal until 5pm on 27 August 2021.
  • Students who avail of this waiver (by selecting 'Yes' on the Student Administration Portal before 5pm on 27 August, 2021) will not be charged a annual repeat fee for Summer 2021.
  • Students whose financial status have not been impacted by COVID and who do not need to avail of the waiver should select 'No', and any annual repeat fees should be paid as normal.
  • Following submission of your waiver declaration, an automatic confirmation email will be sent to your student email address.
  • Details and instructions are available on the Student Hub Online.

Note the SLC does not deal with fees or any other aspect of student registration or progression. We are passing on the information above so that students are aware of it. For any further queries, please contact the Student Hub directly.

What we do

The Science Learning Centre provides support to students through:

  • A dedicated Drop-in Centre
  • Support tutorials for specific modules
  • Digital learning materials such as screencasts/short explanatory videos for concepts in specific modules

The Science Learning Centre aims primarily to support undergraduate students taking first year and some second year modules, although help is given whenever possible to other years also.

The Drop-in Service: suspended on campus, and now available via our SULIS site as an appointment-based service (Spring 2021).

Students can visit the Drop-in Centre without appointment or cost. Tutors who are specialists in the main science and engineering subjects, i.e., chemistry, physics, biology, engineering science are present to address any queries that students may have regarding science-based modules. The Drop-in service does not consist of formal tutorials or classes; rather students bring any questions they have regarding course materials, laboratory report analysis, etc. The tutors are there to assist students in developing their understanding of the basic science and engineering concepts. Students can come individually or in groups.

Support Tutorials: available online via our SULIS site (Spring 2021)

Support tutorials can be arranged by the Science Learning Centre to supplement timetabled module lectures and tutorials. Course material is revisited in the support tutorials, according to the areas that student are finding difficult.

Drop-in Provision for Students Taking Repeat Examinations

Summer 2021: support for those taking repeat assessments will be available prior to repeat assesments taking place.

Details of our supports will be emailed to students. Please email Grainne.Walshe@ul.ie with specific requests.
