Normally, the European Writing Center Association holds a summer conference every other year. We were due to hold a conference this summer, but for a variety of reasons, it was not possible to put together a conference for 2018. As it was agreed that the problems encountered were not merely circumstantial, but systemic, it was further agreed that in lieu of a conference, the board would hold a summer retreat in the Regional Writing Centre and adjoining rooms in the Main Building of the University of Limerick. EWCA members interested in rethinking the EWCA structure in order to create a more sustainable association were invited to attend. Ten EWCA members and two members of the European Association for the Teaching of Academic Writing (EATAW) gathered in Limerick for three days to hash out a new plan.
