The University of Limerick Regional Writing Centre is holding its first Secondary School Essay-writing Competition for 5th and 6th year secondary school students.
The competition will require students to take a decisive stance on the following prompt, which is to be examined in an essay of 1,000 words:
“Lowering the voting age to 16 could help to reconnect young people with their community…” – Kate Green, MP.

The primary purpose of our competition is to increase potential students’ awareness of the learning support mechanisms currently in place throughout the University. At the Regional Writing Centre, we are dedicated to helping students develop strategies to become more confident, critical and autonomous writers. This is a free and friendly place for all students (undergraduate and postgraduate, from arts to science) to come and address any aspect of their writing. The Writing Centre ultimately strives to ensure that those who already have in-depth knowledge of their discipline can communicate this knowledge efficiently and to the benefit of themselves, their teachers, their lecturers and their future employers.
The deadline for receipt of entries for this competition is Friday, 28th April, 2012.
Three shortlisted winners will be announced on Friday May 4th, 2016, and prizes will be awarded at a special ceremony by the President of the University of Limerick, Professor Don Barry. The overall winner of the Essay-writing Competition will receive an iPad, while the second and third place winners will receive a €200 and €100 voucher respectively.
