Student Modelling Week June 5-8

University of Limerick 5 - 8 June 2018

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at University of Limerick will be hosting a four-day student mathematical modelling workshop from June 5th to 8th. This residential workshop will provide participants with experience in team-based modelling of real-world, industry-driven problems, with mentoring provided by experienced researchers. The modelling week will also act as an introduction to study groups with industry, and will provide excellent preparation for the European Study Group with Industry 141 at University College Dublin, June 25th - 29th. 

The workshop is aimed primarily at postgraduate and early career researchers with a background in any area of mathematics, science, engineering, and informatics. Funding is provided by MI-NET, Mathematics for Industry Network, which can support the participation of up to 20 non-local postgraduate students as follows

  1. Refurbishment of the cost of on-campus accommodation for up to five nights. Participants will be provided accommodation on the University campus at a rate of €45 per night, including continental breakfast. Students will be reimbursed by MI-NET after the workshop. Link.   2. Refurbishment of €30 towards travel expenses within Ireland, also refunded after the workshop.

Funding is provided on a first come, first served basis. The participation of undergraduate students is also welcomed, however MI-NET funding is unfortunately unavailable. In addition, lunch and refreshments will also be provided for all participants.

The workshop problems will be motivated by industrial applications and cover a wide variety of topics e.g. fluid mechanics, time series modelling, and data driven stochastic dynamics, thus catering for students from diverse mathematical backgrounds.

Problems are currently being finalised, with descriptions to be uploaded in the coming weeks.


Participants will work in small groups on problems proposed by experienced researchers with substantial industrial experience. 

Mentors are also currently being confirmed.
