Demographic noise slows down cycles of dominance.

The department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Limerick invites you to a seminar by Dr Tim Rogers (University of Bath)

Title:  Demographic noise slows down cycles of dominance. 

Abstract: In this talk I will discuss the phenomenon of cyclic dominance in the Rock–Paper–Scissors model, studied in three different frameworks: 1) Ordinary differential equations for mean-field dynamics in the limit of large populations, exhibiting a limit cycle, 2) Stochastic differential equations describing noise around the limit cycle in large but finite populations, 3) Markov chain models of small populations exhibiting strong stochastic effects. In particular, I will show how the effect of demographic noise (arising from the finiteness of populations) is to increase the period of cycles of dominance.
