Books
All the course books that are used on language modules are available to consult in the LRA. We also have the accompanying tapes, videos or software. Students can borrow the material for a short time to help them complete their homework or independent study. You can also find material that will help you get to know the culture and society where your target language is spoken.
Films
Films are an entertaining way of improving comprehension. The LRA houses a large collection of classic and modern cinema in French, Spanish, German, Irish, English and Japanese. Many of those films have subtitles in English or in the target language. We also have a limited collection of silent films as well as Italian, Swedish, Polish, Portuguese and Russian cinema. We are continuously adding new titles to our collection. The full catalogues of films and documentaries available can be found in the LLH, LC1-008.
Software
A selection of language learning software packages is available on all the PCs in the LRA CALL labs. Ask in the main office in LC1-008, where we will be delighted to help you choose a package to suit your needs.
Internet
The Languages Building has wireless Internet access. Internet is also available in the CALL labs (LC1-016 and LC1-002). The Internet provides easy access to newspapers in various languages, as well as access to sites geared towards specific areas of language learning. Our lists of useful websites are always good starting points and are available in the CALL labs.
Independent Learning Resources
The LLH also has an extensive collection of publications, papers and guides that can assist in understanding Self-Directed Learning (SDL). SDL is a very important aspect of studying languages. We also have a variety of supplementary resources that students can use to improve specific areas of their target language. Alternatively, you can consult our Worksheets page.
