Ruth Moloney undertook a placement with Lloyd’s Underwriter Atrium from January 9th to 13th 2017. Atrium is a long established, leading specialist insurance and reinsurance business underwriting through Syndicate 609 at Lloyd’s. Atrium has an unrivalled underwriting and claims expertise, exceptional long-term performance and best in class “managing agency”. Chiefly, Atrium underwrite maritime, energy, aerospace and liability classes. Atrium has offices in Singapore, USA, Canada and London.

Mr James Weigall, Underwriter at Atrium for Aviation and Aviation War Risk, kindly hosted Ruth at Lloyd’s and arranged her itinerary for the week. As part of her placement, Ruth also spent time at Guy Carpenter Corporation (specialist reinsurance broker) and Hayward Aviation (international specialist aviation insurance broker). Ruth had direct access to senior personnel including Underwriters at the various businesses visited; she observed how a Lloyd’s underwriter transacts insurance in all areas of the Atrium segmented business model (marine, aviation, energy, space and claims management) in addition to that of Guy Carpenter Corporation and Hayward Aviation. This placement was a very positive experience that provided an insight into the complex and multifaceted business of insurance at Lloyd’s, the world’s leading insurance market.
