Dr Laura Cahillane makes Oireachtas Submission on Judicial Appointments Reform.
Dr Laura Cahillane was invited to make a submission to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice on the issue of Judicial Appointments Reform, along with Dr Tom Hickey of DCU and Dr David Kenny of TCD.
A number of recommendations were made including:
That candidates sent forward to government should be ranked.
That the Attorney General should be ineligible for membership of the JAC.
That there should be a requirement for equal “lay” and “legal” representation on the JAC.
That shortlisted candidates should undergo formal interview by the JAC.
That further detail be provided on the concept of “merit”.
That diversity strategy be required
That the Attorney General be ineligible for appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court or Court of Appeal for a period of at least 12 months after leaving office.
