The Hon. Mr Justice John Murray

Mr Justice Murray is a (retired) Senior Ordinary Member of the Supreme Court of Ireland having completed a seven year term of office as Chief Justice of Ireland, the highest judicial office in the State, from 2007 to 2011. Mr Justice Murray is a former attorney general of Ireland having occupied the role from August to December 1982 and again from 1987 to 1991 and is a former judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union on which he served for a period of eight years from 1991 to 1999. Moreover, from 1997 to 2000, Mr Justice Murray also held a visiting professorship in Law at the Université de Louvain, Belgium, and is a former chairperson of both the Anti-Fraud Committee of the European Central Bank and the ad hoc Ethical Committee of the European Commission. Mr Justice Murray is currently a member of the Council of State, chairman of the Advisory Panel of Experts on Candidates for Election, as judge to the European Court of Human Rights, chancellor of the University of Limerick, and chairman of the University’s governing authority.
