International Criminal Law Committee

On Friday 30th June and Saturday 1st July Dr Ger Coffey (Course Director of the LLM/MA in Human Rights in Criminal Justice) attended the intercessional meeting of the Complementarity in International Criminal Law Committee of the International law Association in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Dr Coffey is the Irish member of this international criminal law committee.

The mandate of the Committee is to explore the  extent to which the crimes within the International Criminal Court’s jurisdiction are in fact addressed at the domestic level, either through investigations and prosecutions or by alternative means, and when they are not, why not. The Committee examines how a policy of so-called ‘positive complementarity’ could overcome any obstacles and which organisations are best placed to implement such policy and to what extent domestic efforts to address international crimes could result in a successful admissibility challenge on grounds of complementarity before the Court.
