On Monday 10th February, The Hon. Mr Justice John Edwards, Judge of the Court of Appeal, delivered a guest lecture on ‘The Judicial Council Act 2019, Sentencing Guidelines and Information Committee - Great Expectations’ to Human Rights in Criminal Justice master’s students and staff in the School of Law and Centre for Crime, Justice & Victim Studies.
Mr Justice Edwards gave a fascinating insight into sentencing guidelines in light of the Judicial Council Act 2019. The interactive seminar was followed by an informative question and answer session. This was an excellent pedagogical exercise for students linking academic debates on the sentencing process, judicial sentencing discretion and perceived disparity in sentencing. The seminar was very well attended by students and staff who benefited from Mr Justice Edward’s great expertise and valuable insights into the sentencing process at trial court and appellate review of sentencing decisions.
The event was organised by Dr Ger Coffey, Course Director of the LLM/MA in Human Rights in Criminal Justice and member of the Centre for Crime, Justice & Victim Studies in the School of Law.
