Guest Lecture on the European Arrest Warrant

On Monday 13th March, The Hon. Mr Justice John Edwards, Judge of the Court of Appeal, and Adjunct Professor in the School of Law, delivered a guest lecture entitled “Fundamental Rights as a basis for objecting before the Irish Courts to surrender on foot of a European Arrest Warrant.”

Students on the Human Rights in Criminal Justice masters programme benefited from Mr Justice Edwards lecture which explained that the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) is built on a foundation of mutual trust and confidence between EU member states. The EAW improves and simplifies judicial procedures for the surrender of persons to another state for the purpose of conducting a criminal prosecution or executing a custodial sentence.

Students gained valuable insights into this important area of criminal justice from a national and European perspective and benefited enormously from the exchange of ideas during the discussion that followed the guest lecture.
