On Wednesday 13th December, Dr Ger Coffey (Course Director of the LLM/MA Human Rights in Criminal Justice and member of the Centre for Crime, Justice and Victim Studies) was invited to deliver a guest lecture as part of the Department of Law Research Seminar Series at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. The Law Research Seminar Series provides an opportunity for invited scholars to discuss their academic work, to share their knowledge and reflections on various different legal topics and to develop new ideas.
Dr Coffey delivered a guest lecture entitled “Complementarity and Ne Bis in Idem: Two Streams Running through the Same Channel?” based on his current research into the principles of complementarity and ne bis in idem (double jeopardy) in the Rome Statute that created the International Criminal Court. This pertains to the manner of establishing jurisdiction by the Court and commencement of criminal proceedings which is the most important aspect of the relationship between the Court and a State Party to the Rome Statute.
