“Hang ‘em and flog ‘em! “Hang ‘em and flog ‘em!

On Wednesday 6th December, The Hon. Mr Justice John Edwards, Judge of the Court of Appeal, delivered a guest lecture entitled “Hang ‘em and flog ‘em! Applications to review sentences on grounds of undue leniency - do they now represent the exception or the rule?”. The event was organised by Dr Ger Coffey Course Director of the LLM/MA Human Rights in Criminal Justice and member of the Centre for Crime, Justice and Victim Studies in the School of Law.

Mr Justice Edwards described the principles of sentencing and the proposed introduction of a Sentencing Council to produce sentencing guidelines for trial court judges. This was a very beneficial pedagogical seminar for students and faculty linking the academic debate on the criminal justice and sentencing processes with the practicalities of sentencing by trial courts and review by the Court of Appeal.

The seminar was very well attended by students and faculty who benefited from the exchange of ideas and gained valuable insights into the sentencing process and the role of the Court of Appeal.
