In line with UL’s IT Strategy, UL Enable, ITD are continuing with our mission to modernize UL’s IT infrastructure. Our aim is to deliver a better end user experience for staff and students, to enhance UL’s IT security defence posture, to facilitate the adoption of newer technologies that can enhance collaboration and to facilitate improved productivity across UL’s user community.
One of the strategic IT projects that is within the portfolio of modernisation initiatives is the adoption and migration to the Microsoft Office 365 environment for students and staff within the University. The end vision for this project is to provide an expanded set of Microsoft Services, enhance security for all users across the systems and to facilitate the retirement of legacy IT infrastructure and legacy software.
The ‘UL-365’ project incorporates the setting up of a new single Office 365 environment under which all student and staff Microsoft services will reside. The new Office 365 environment will contain Email, OneDrive, OneNote and SharePoint data and will involve migrating staff email accounts from local servers to the new Office 365 environment. The project commenced during the summer of 2019 and the following table outlines the key ‘high-level’ phases within the overall project.

This is an exciting development which will provide an enhanced and future proofed set of Microsoft services for students and staff at the University of Limerick. ITD will keep you informed on key project developments as the projects evolve. More detailed communications will be issued to some users directly impacted by some of the changes. Some existing users of Office 365 toolset will need to take preparatory steps to ensure a seamless migration process.
