The Centre in the News (national and international)

Co-founder and long term joined director, Dr Joachim Fischer, has just been awarded a Jean Monnet Chair in European Cultural Studies. This is fantastic reward for all the work Joachim has carried out over nearly three decades in supporting, defending and strengthening European Studies at UL, through his committed directorship of the BA in European Studies and his work within the Centre for Irish-German Studies (as co-director with Dr Gisela Holfter), the Ralahine Centre for Utopian Studies and, of course, the Centre for European Studies (CEUROS). Gisela Holfter will take over as director of the Centre.  07 August 2019

Derek Scally, Higgins visit marks 90 years of Irish-German diplomacy, Irish Times, 1. July 2019: Dr Gisela Holfter joint director of the University of Limerick’s Centre for German-Irish Studies, described the ties – unique in the EU for being unblemished by conflict – as an “untroubled friendship”. “But that shouldn’t blind us: there are misunderstandings, good relations are not a given and there is always room for improvement,” said Holfter, whose UL centre co-sponsored the anniversary event. With her research into bilateral links, Holfter has arguably done the most to bring Germany and Ireland together since Nobel laureate Heinrich Böll.
