Welcome to Gender, Culture & Society @ UL

Gender, Culture & Society @ UL offers challenging programmes that address the intersections of gender, sexuality ‘race’, class, and other identities to examine multidimensional inequalities and injustices.  Although coordinated within the Department of Sociology, our programmes and research activities are determinedly interdisciplinary.  As such, questions of gender, culture and society are investigated in relation to society, popular culture, literature, history and politics.

It is possible to choose feminist, queer theory and gender-focused modules at undergraduate level in both sociology and literature. Our Gender, Culture & Society MA programme is designed specifically to cater for students interested in the interdisciplinary study of gender in culture and society. It provides students with advanced research skills and prepares them for work in international, state and local government and NGO contexts around equality, justice and socio-cultural issues. This programme also provides training for PhD level research. It is offered on a full-time and part-time basis and students can opt for modules offered by several departments in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Our Gender, Culture and Society PhD programme fosters an intellectual community and vibrant research culture among all those researching feminist and gender/sexuality-related topics at PhD level. The Gender, Culture & Society PhD Forum is largely peer-led and creates a lively supportive context for the sharing of knowledge and skills between PhD students. Both structured and traditional routes to the qualification of PhD are offered.
