On 1 November 2017 Gerry O’Brien took up his current position as UL’s first Chief Operating Officer and Registrar and was subsequently appointed Deputy President. He is responsible for the provision of the majority of the administrative services of the University to ensure that the university’s core work of research, teaching and service to the wider community is enabled and supported as effectively and efficiently as possible.
The Deputy President, Chief Operating Officer and Registrar (DPCOOR) is a member of the Executive Committee with specific responsibility for a number of key services including: Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Management Planning & Reporting, Corporate Secretarial and Legal, Governance and Risk, Academic Registry (including the Admissions Office), Campus and Estates, Marketing & Communications and Public Relations. The DPCOOR is also responsible for several Student Services such as Health and Safety and Sports and Recreation as well as the commercial activities of the University.
Prior to joining UL Gerry had been Bursar and Vice-President for Finance at University College Dublin since 2007 with responsibility for finance, estates, commercial activities, student services, legal, health and safety and procurement. Prior to that, Gerry worked in the business-process outsource and financial services industries where he held managing director and finance director level roles. Gerry has worked for companies including Capita, Prudential, Aviva, Price Waterhouse Coopers and BDO. He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and a graduate of UCD.
