Assistive Technology Outreach


The main aim of the assistive technology outreach programme is to increase the utilisation of assistive technology supports by students with disabilities in their education. Furthermore, to increase the awareness of assistive technology supports to educational professionals (schools, teachers, educational psychologists, etc.) and the student support network (family members etc.).

A specific goal within this aim is to target students with disabilities with visual, hearing and physical disabilities as a priority and develop initiatives to increase the numbers of students with disabilities in these groups attending third level education.

The assistive technology outreach programme will achieve this through completing assistive technology information sessions each calendar year (see events), through  the completion of school visits (on request) and the assistive technology summer training programmes, as well as providing assistive technology assessments and supports.

EATC will also continue to support the Shannon consortium partners including Limerick Institute of Technology, Mary Immaculate College Limerick & Institute of Technology Tralee and develop new HEI customers & partnerships in the mid-west region.

Please note assistive technology assessments can be accommodated for the target groups only, students with visual, hearing or physical disabilities. Students with specific learning difficulties due to the large numbers in this group will be accommodated through our assistive technology information sessions and group training programmes.

The C-Pen Exam Reader pen scanner is an electronic pen the uses text to speech to read aloud printed text. The C-Pen Exam Reader is an orange portable, pocket-sized device that reads text out aloud with an English human-like digital voice used instead of a human reader.

This device means students who have reading difficulties such as dyslexia can independently take exams knowing that they can read and understand the questions.  Students using the pen bring their own in-ear headphones to use with the reading pen via 3.5mm headphone socket. All students are given the opportunity to train on the reading pen prior to exams.

The reading pens have been used in UL for the last four years by first years through to postgraduate students. The reading pen is also available as a reasonable accommodation in the Leaving Cert resulting in more and more students entering college and university already trained on how to use the reading pen in exams.
