Dr Martin J. Leahy welcomes Irish Government's Charles Parsons funding (December 2006) :
"We are delighted with the receipt of €3.1M from the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources (DCMNR). Several research centres have come together within UL to create the Charles Parsons Initiative with the purpose of researching viable solutions to energy issues of national priority, such as the ever-increasing price of fossil fuels. The UL researchers aim to produce improved bio-fuels and fuel cells and to generate greater knowledge of the untapped wind and wave energy in the north Atlantic. Research will be conducted into producing viable alternative energy sources to tackle Ireland's reliance on fossil fuels. The 7-year contracts for researchers, in particular, demonstrates excellent strategic thinking by DCMNR which recognises the importance of energy in the Irish context."
