Poet Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin to read at University of Limerick
The Creative Writing programme at UL will host the great Irish poet Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin on October 24th, with world-premiere readings from her new book.
One of Ireland's best and most distinguished poets, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, will be welcomed by the University of Limerick next week, where she will read from her work as part of the 2019 Guest Vocals poetry series.
The reading will take place in the Millstream Common Room at UL on Oct 24th at 2pm. Admission is free to this very special event, and all are welcome, though tickets are limited.
Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin was born in Cork City in 1942. She was a founder member of the literary journal Cyphers in 1975. Her first collection, Acts and Monuments, won the Patrick Kavanagh Award. Her seven collections of poems include The Girl Who Married the Reindeer, The Sun-fish, which won the Griffin International Poetry Prize, and Selected Poems, a co-publication from Faber and Faber and the Gallery press, and more recently The Boys of Blue Hill. Her work, described by Sean O'Brien as full of 'imaginative confidence and haunting authority', has been added to the Leaving Cert Poetry Syllabus. She is a Professor Emeritus at Trinity College Dublin, a former Ireland Professor of Poetry, and a member of Aosdana. Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin's next collection of poems, The Mother House, is forthcoming from the Gallery press, and this event will be the first time that she has read publically from that book.
UL's Masters in Creative Writing is part of UL's School of English, Irish and Communication, and is widely regarded as the most vibrant postgraduate programmes in creative writing in the country. It is led by the novelist Joseph O'Connor, who is the holder of the Frank McCourt Chair in Creative Writing. The novelists Donal Ryan, Sarah Moore Fitzgerald, Rob Doyle, and the poet Martin Dyar are also currently teaching on the MA in Creative Writing.
A special welcome will be extended to a group of secondary school students from Ard Scoil Rís in Limerick City, who will attend Eilean Ni Cuilleanain's reading in UL with their teacher Connie McLoughlin. Ard Scoil Rís previously hosted the poet Martin Dyar, UL's 2018 Arts Council writer in residence fellow, for a series of poetry talks and workshops, and that work has led to a special outreach rapport.
