Masculinities in Contemporary Irish language Short Stories / Fireannachtaí i nGearrscéalaíocht na Gaeilge

This seminar will offer an overview of the prominence of male characters and issues pertaining to masculinities in Irish language short fiction. It will examine works by Gabhán Ó Fachtna, Daithí Ó Muirí and Dave Duggan, and look at how these writers exploration of men's experience of war, marginalization and conflict marks a striking departure in Irish language writing of recent years. The seminar will be conducted in English to enable non-Irish speakers to take part in the seminar. Questions and discussion will be welcome in both Irish and English.
Dr Sorcha de Brún is a lecturer in Irish in the School of Irish, English, and Communication in the University of Limerick, where she teaches narrative and modernism in Irish language prose writing, the Irish language Gothic novel, and Irish language short film. Sorcha earned her PhD in modern Irish from Ulster University, and her Masters in Political Philosophy and Theory from University College Dublin. She is currently researching how representations of masculinity interact with contemporary political concerns in Irish language fiction. She has conducted extensive research on narrative and masculinities in the works of Máirtín Ó Cadhain, Micheál Ó Conghaile, Pádraig Ó Cíobháin, Daithí Ó Muirí, and Gabhán Ó Fachtna, and on Irish language literary translation. Her recent international research areas include Educational Technology and the Irish language, Irish language fiction and surrealist writing, and representations of class in the novels of Pádraic Breathnach.
