MA IN CREATIVE WRITING at The University of Limerick:
The University of Limerick offers a Master of Arts in Creative Writing, taught by internationally successful authors including our Chair of Creative Writing, Professor Joseph O’Connor (author of eight novels including Ghost Light, The Thrill of it All and the million-selling Star of the Sea, winner of the Irish PEN Award for Outstanding Achievement in Literature), Donal Ryan (author of The Thing About December and The Spinning Heart, winner of the Guardian First Book Award), Professor Giles Foden, (author of The Last King of Scotland) and acclaimed poet Mary O’Malley, (author of Valparaiso), a member of Aosdana, the Irish
academy of writers and artists.
This one-year programme enables students to develop their creative writing skills through careful consideration of the work of established writers; through study of the elements of a piece of creative writing; through assignments that foster strategies for revision of their work; and through an understanding of the requirements of the submission and publication process. Through coursework students consider the role of plot, characterization, dialogue, and point-of-view in crafting compelling fiction.
Our Creative Writing students experience teaching-visits, seminars and readings from outstanding contemporary authors. Recent visitors have included Colum McCann, Claire Keegan, Christine Dwyer Hickey, Colin Barrett, Sara Baume and Pulitzer prize winner Richard Ford.
Students gain practical experience through working on our online literary journal The Ogham Stone, in meeting publishers, editors and literary agents, and in the preparation of their dissertation portfolios.
All forms of written creativity are welcome on this MA. Recent graduates of the MA have been published nationally and have been short-listed for a number of literary prizes, including the prestigious Hennessy New Writer of the Year Award.
Students on this MA have the opportunity to attend the annual UL/Frank McCourt Creative Writing Summer School at Glucksman Ireland House, New York University.
Applications should be submitted online. Further
