As part of the global programme for the 1916 Centenary Commemorations, Dr Tina O’Toole recently gave a keynote address at the University of São Paulo conference on “Roger Casement and the 1916 Centenary”. Professors Jane Ohlmeyer (TCD) and Luke Gibbons (NUI Maynooth) were the other keynote speakers at this wide-ranging international event, which involved top scholars from across the Americas and Europe. Several papers addressed Casement’s humanitarian record in the Putumayo, and an exhibition of South American photographs taken by Casement and collected by Jaime Vásquez Valcárcel, from Iquitos, was foregrounded during the event. The event was sponsored by USP and the Irish embassy in Brazil; Dr O’Toole’s paper was chaired by São Paulo Consul General, Sharon Lennon, and attended by the Irish ambassador to Brazil, Brian Glynn.

During her address, Tina noted the link between the University of Limerick and the University of São Paulo, Brazil. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the two universities in 2012.
