The 5th International Conference of Hispanic Linguistics

The 5th International Conference of Hispanic Linguistics (3rd Biennial Meeting of the International Association for the Study of Spanish in Society [SiS]) was held at UL 8th – 10th July 2010. The conference was co-organised by David Atkinson and Máiréad Moriarty and delegates attended from North and South America, Australia, Spain, Ireland, the UK and other European countries. The conference was formally opened by Angela Chambers and a very successful pre-conference workshop was given by Helen Kelly-Holmes, entitled 'Virtual linguistic ethnography'. The plenary speakers were:

Carol Klee (University of Minnesota) - Contact-Induced Language Change in the Andes: (Somewhat) Different Outcomes in Different Contexts.

Melissa Moyer (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) - Multilingualism and Mobilities: Intersections of Language, Social Class, and Ethnicity.

Despite the relentlessly inclement weather, there was a strong consensus among the delegates that the conference was very enjoyable and the academic programme highly stimulating and productive.
