Biography

Rodrigo holds a Ph.D. in Taxation from the University of Exeter, UK (under the supervision of Professor Lynne Oats); and, a Master's in Taxation, a Bsc in Accounting and Auditing and the professional qualifications of Accountant and Engineer in Information Systems and Management Control, all from the School of Economics and Business (FEN), University of Chile. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

His research area is taxation policy and practice from political, institutional and organisational perspectives, in domestic and international settings. Although, most of his research is qualitative using interviews, within which he has specialised in elite interviewing with policy-makers/politicians/bureaucrats and senior tax professionals; more recently he has started to use contemporary historical documents to explore tax policy development in political and historical contexts. Over the years, he has gained competence in the theory of practice developed by Pierre Bourdieu, and recently has expanded to understand part of Michel Foucault's writings. So far, his research has been published in journals such as The British Accounting Review (Q1), Critical Perspectives on Accounting (Q1), and the Journal of Tax Administration (ABS 2*).

In addition to his research duties, Rodrigo is a committed lecturer teaching/having taught at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in various countries, including Ireland, the United Kingdom, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and his home country, Chile, in subjects such as Corporation and Personal tax, Value Added Tax, Principles of International Taxation, Tax Policy and Politics, Management Accounting, and Qualitative Research Methods. In his lectures, he aims to bring current research into the classroom to enrich students' experience. He has also supervised numerous research projects at undergraduate and master's levels, and also to two Ph.D. students in taxation until completion at the University of Birmingham, UK (co-supervised with Professor Penelope Tuck). At present, he is co-supervising (along with Professor Silvia Pereira de Castro Casa nova) one Ph.D. student in critical accounting at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Since August 2023, Rodrigo serves as Network and Communication Co-Leader of the Alternative Accounting Research Network (AARN).

He joined the University of Limerick in 2024 and is currently working in the research project "The tax state". He has held full time positions at the University of Chile and University of Birmingham, UK.
