Biography

I am an Assistant Professor at the School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics at the University of Limerick, where I currently coordinate final year modules in Spanish (SP4147/8 and SP4247/8).

I completed my PhD in Translation Studies, a corpus-based approach to the translation of Galician narrative into English, at University College Cork in 2022. My work was awarded the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland Publication Prize in 2022 and I am currently working on my forthcoming monograph Translation Landscapes: Contemporary Galician Fiction in English, to be published with Legenda in 2023.

I have also collaborated extensively with Dr Olga Castro on research related to flows of literary translation and cultural diplomacy in minoritized cultures, first as a research assistant and collaborator in the British Academy/Leverhulme-funded project "Stateless Cultures in Translation: the case of 21st century Basque, Catalan and Galician Literatures in the UK", and subsequently as academic partner in the project "Changing the translation landscape from multilingual Spain: Cultural Diplomacy and the UK publishing market", which looked at the staging of multilingualism in Spain at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2022 in partnership with the Spanish Ministry of Culture. As part of our ongoing collaboration, we also published a special issue on "Crossing Borders in Translation and Interpreting Studies" for Galicia 21. Journal of Contemporary Galician Studies (2019).

Besides my work as a scholar and lecturer, I have been a translator for the creative industries for the past 10 years, mostly focusing on video game translation. I am currently developing my second research project, which will combine my academic and professional experience to focus on the use of video games (and their translations) for minority/minoritized language learning and engagement.

Research Interests

My main research interests include translation and ideology, cultural representation, translation in non-hegemonic cultures, video game translation and localization and the role of translation in the construction of identities in a global world, as well as the application of corpus-based methodologies to the study of texts (including multimodal production) and their translations.

I am actively looking for collaborations in these areas, particularly in relation to literary and video game translation/localization in the context of minority and minoritized cultures. If you are interested, please do get in touch at laura.linares@ul.ie. I also welcome expressions of interest for MA and PhD projects in these areas.
