Prof. B. A. Glowacki holds a Bernal Chair in Energy in the Department of Physics & Energy of the University of Limerick, Ireland. He graduated in physics and received a PhD in the Polish Academy of Science. He received the life title of Professor from the President of Poland and became an Expert in Energy at the Institute of Power Engineering in Poland. He has received a Professorship of Energy and Materials Science in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy of the University of Cambridge. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and a Chartered Engineer.
Prof. Glowacki’s academic and strategic leadership in energy technology is recognised internationally: he is a member of the World Energy Council, and the European Energy Research Alliance representative responsible for the basic science programme policy, which seeks to combine the potential of European research institutions. He has given plenary lectures and invited talks at numerous international conferences and in international research establishments and companies. He has co-organised thematic international conferences and workshops, principally on applied superconductivity and hydrogen-cryomagnetic technologies.
Prof. Glowacki has published 8 book chapters and 19 patents, and authored or co-authored 311 research publications, receiving 2478 citations and an h-index of 24.
Prof. Glowacki’s research field is the physics, chemistry and technology of metal, oxide, carbon and electro-ceramic thin films and nanostructures for energy applications. There is a particular emphasis on deposition using advanced inkjet printing technology, for which he has initiated a network of international partners, the Transnational Energy Materials Printing Research Initiative, http://www.tempri.eu. He is particularly interested in electromagnetically assisted deposition and processing with regard to the structural, electrical and optical characteristics of films and interfaces. Recent and current work is principally on superconductors for MRI applications, wind generators, fault current limiters and transmission cables. His research on carbon use reduction and new advanced carbon technologies is focused on direct carbon solid oxide fuel cells, microwave plasma processing of CH4 and CO2, as well as supercapacitors and hydrogen technologies including liquefaction. He has a deep interest in applications of energy devices where fundamental quantum physics meets heavy industry.

In teaching, Prof. Glowacki has lectured on superconductivity and magnetism, electromagnetic properties of nanomaterials and cryogenic technologies for many years. He has created a course on Hydrogen Technologies and Cryogenic Materials and Techniques to prepare students for the increasingly important liquid hydrogen technologies. Beyond university teaching, Prof. Glowacki also created an interdisciplinary 81 video series “Lectures on Superconductivity” with contributions from well established international experts to educate researchers and students. 142,000 viewings  have been logged online and 3000 DVDs distributed.
