The MightyBar – Composite Braided Rail

The MightyBar handrail is a composite braided rail produced by Irish company Global Green Composites who are based in Meath. IComp member, Burgmann Packings Composites provide the braided materials and indeed it was through their membership of IComp that both companies came together to develop this innovative product.

Using bespoke braided preforms from Burgmann Packings it has been possible to develop a product particularly well suited to non-linear shapes with different as well as changing sizes.  The Mighty Bar has been shown under test conditions to match steel products, but is up to 70% lighter than the steel equivalent.  This combination of part properties with production flexibility has attracted great interest in the transport sector, particularly train, tram and bus manufacturers.

The flexibility of the braided preforms was tailored to the demands of the production method.   This in turn produced a combination of shortened lay-up times, fast resin infusion and final strength that more than matched the combination of the cost and performance required by the transport sector.  MightyBar is available in a range of colours and finishes to suit all applications.

The MightBar won a Technical Innovation award at the UK Light Rail Awards (2015). Recognising this achievement, the judging panel commented: “Reducing weight saves on the energy used to power a light rail vehicle and reduces the impact it has on track and infrastructure – every kilo can make a difference… the Mighty Bar uses the latest composite technology to offer this weight reduction, but also something that is more practical and more attractive than steel or aluminium. It’s non-slip, warm to the touch and never needs painting, so it’s a deserving winner for the fact that it can be used on doors, station platforms and stairways as well – in fact pretty much anywhere in the passenger environment.”
