Learn to teach RSC’s Spectroscopy in a Suitcase workshops

SSPC –UL and NUIG together have recently been awarded the RSC’s Spectroscopy in a Suitcase kit and programme. The RSC's Spectroscopy in a Suitcase scheme is an outreach activity which gives school students the chance to learn about spectroscopy through hands-on experience. As well as covering the principles of spectroscopic techniques, the activities use real-life contexts to demonstrate the applications of the techniques. The kits are hosted by Universities and events are delivered by University staff and students, so have a strong emphasis on encouraging school pupils to consider studying chemistry and the career opportunities available. The scheme is free of charge, with no costs involved for interested schools.

Training events for staff and students will take place at UL and NUIG.  All expenses related to school visits carried out through this programme will be covered.

The following equipment will be available to use: WPA Lightwave II UV/Vis Spectrophotometer and  Bruker Alpha ATR FTIR

The workshops which have been developed are:

  • Body in a lab: aspirin overdose
  • Olympic doping
  • Food dye analysis

The RSC team will be visiting NUIG and UL to provide training on these kits and on how to deliver the associated workshops on the 23rd (NUIG) and 24th (UL) of March. The schedule is below:

23rd March, NUIG: 15.00-17.00

Welcome to SIAS and introduction

Workshop and demonstrations of equipment

To register email: peter.crowley@nuigalway.ie

24th March, UL: 11.00-13.00

Welcome to SIAS and introduction

Workshop and demonstrations of equipment

To register email: sarah.hayes@ul.ie

Graduate and interested undergraduate students are invited to attend so that as many people as possible can be trained and potentially actively participate in the programme. UL staff are also invited as this training could facilitate some exiting summer camps/pupil workshops.
