Martin Fennell Head of R&D at RUSAL Aughinish Alumina will give a guest lecture for Materials Processing on Friday, 1 April at 2.00pm in MSG-025 MSSI Building Extension. The lecture will focus on alumina detailing the process from ore to alumina to aluminium and the role of alumina and aluminium within the EU raw materials market. Ireland is Europes largest producer of alumina producing up to 2 million tonnes of alumina per annum at the Aughinish Alumina plant.
Martin graduated from UCD - Chemical Engineering in 1987. MBA from UL in 1996. Employed by Aughinish since 1987. Seconded to operations in Canada in the early 1990's for 3 years. Worked in production in the early years of career and subsequently as a process engineer in a number of production expansions. In the late 1990's headed up a group looking at advanced control and automation opportunities to optimise the operation. Following the sale of Aughinish by Alcan to Glencore in 1999 began to develop the R&D function at Aughinish. Since 2002 has been very active in developing research links with UL and in 2004 became R&D manager and co-ordinated a number of projects in FP5 and FP6. Continues to manage R&D at Aughinish but has also a wider role providing technical support to other Rusal refineries.
