Academic English Courses - Preparation for University summer 2020 – ONLINE DELIVERY

The English Language Preparation for University Programmes cater specifically for the language needs of students who intend to study for an undergraduate, study abroad or postgraduate degree at the University of Limerick. They are aimed at students who have reached the academic entry requirements for their chosen course but need to improve their English in order to meet the English language entry requirements for their chosen pathway at UL.  They are very suitable for students who have received a conditional offer from the University of Limerick. Students should be aware of the minimum English language requirements for the study programme of their choice.

Due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, the ULLC teaching team will run the summer P4U courses online for 2020. These have been adapted to suit a more flexible online delivery mode and are offered as follows:

10 weeks + 2 days

6 weeks + 2 days

4 weeks + 2 days

These courses are open to all students with an offer to study in Ireland at a third level institution. They offer students a pathway onto their chosen degree studies, and enable them to become familiar with being an online student at an institution in an English speaking country.

Course Outcomes

It is expected that by the end of the course students will have

  • developed their communication skills
  • reached the English language requirements for entering a degree programme at the University of Limerick
  • developed the language and study skills needed for university course work, whether for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree
  • have a greater knowledge of how to learn independently
  • expanded their knowledge of Irish culture
  • more awareness of university life

Students who achieve a final passing grade will have met the English language requirements for entry to the majority of programmes at the University of Limerick (equivalent IELTS 6.5).  It will not be necessary for such students to take an external English language test at the end of their course.  Before starting the course students should check that their academic qualifications will allow them to enter a programme at the University of Limerick.

The courses will consist of modules on:

  • Integrated English Language Skills
  • Academic Reading
  • Academic Writing
  • Academic Listening
  • Academic Speaking
  • Academic vocabulary and grammatical structures

The first 2 days will focus on an orientation to the course with guidance on using the UL platform. There will also be an opportunity to get to know the staff and other students on the course. During the course, students will work on improving their language competence together with developing their language skills. They will also obtain an understanding of Irish HE academic conventions and expectations.

Students will be part of a virtual learning community and will be expected to fully engage with the synchronous (real time) input sessions. Additional learning will take place through asynchronous tasks, which will enable students to study at their own pace at a time that is most suitable for them.

Teachers will use a range of tools to deliver the course in an interactive and meaningful way. There will be a range of activities and tasks with teachers ensuring that students have every opportunity for learning to take place. This will include the use of synchronous lectures/classes; clear language tasks; cultural sessions; self-study and group work; self-reflection; blogs; quizzes; discussions; and a portfolio of work.

The last day of class in 2020 will be Friday 18 December.

To gain entry to the English Language Preparation for University Programmes students must produce evidence of their English language level in the form of a recent DET/IELTS band score or equivalent.  The band score required will depend on the length of the course for which the student is applying. See minimum entry requirements for each course above.

Assessment will be continuous, i.e. there will be a number of assessments during the course rather than one final examination. Students may also need to sit an external English exam during the course. Students will be expected to attend and participate in all online sessions.
