Technical Communication and Instructional Design

Welcome to Technical Communication and Instructional Design (TCID), which is situated within the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Limerick. Technical communication and instructional design are fast-growing disciplines worldwide, as communication media become more pervasive and technology more complex.  The University of Limerick pioneered a full-time programme in technical communication in 1995.  Our current postgraduate programmes focus on online content development for e-learning and technical/professional communication, and emphasise strengths developed over almost two decades at the University of Limerick in technical communication and instructional design. . Our modules are also offered on various undergraduate programmes, including the New Media and Cultural Studies stream of the new Bachelor of Arts (LM002), in the Bachelor of Arts in Applied Languages (LM044), and in the Bachelor of Laws (Law Plus) (LM029).

Technical Communication and Instructional Design students learn how to:

  • Write clear, correct, precise content.
  • Use multimedia applications.
  • Design and deliver online learning materials.
  • Evaluate instructional tools and programs.
  • Deploy and use Web 2.0 technologies to collaborate.
  • Manage complex writing and design projects.
  • Communicate effectively in online and face-to-face environments.

We offer two postgraduate programmes:

  • Graduate Certificate in Technical Writing (by distance learning).
  • MA in Technical Communication and E-Learning (on campus and online, full-time and part-time).
