A high point in the history of the Centre for Irish-German Studies was the State visit of German President Frank-Walter Stein- Meier. It was wonderful and a great honour to meet him and the Irish President Michael D. Higgins at University of Limerick on October 29.

After being greeted by UL president Professor Kerstin Mey the Irish and German presidents got an insight into the many facets and the richness of the Irish-German book collection, especially the recent addition of the Gottschalk collection in the Special Collections of our Glucksman Library and other treasures there by Ken Bergin, Head of Special Collections, and Professor Gisela Holfter.

This was followed by a discussion on the future of Europe and Europe’s contribution to social justice in the world with students, chaired by Professor Joachim Fischer. After that, the presidents gained insights into hurling at the UL Sports complex.
